Visual intelligence is a key skill in a world full of pictorial information. Having a keen sense of the visual world enables students to become discerning, sharpening their skills of assessment, analysis and articulation. We offer History of Art A level courses as well as short courses. The study of the History of Art helps students tease out the social, political and personal narratives of a piece of art, so that they can carve out a story of human experience.

The scope of the History of Art A level covers painting, sculpture and architecture from both the Western European traditions. ‘World’ Art in their historical and cultural contexts. When studying History of Art with me, you will ask a lot of questions and you will be able to use and expand your knowledge of historical, literary and scientific context as we explore how art, context and thought develop and intertwine.

Along these lines of enquiry we will ask:

  • Who made this?
  • What is the subject?
  • What are they made of?
  • When were they made?
  • How were they used?
  • Who used them?
  • How do they compare to similar objects, or other representations of the same subject?

We ask these questions in different ways, but the most important question an art historian asks is: why does this object (be it a painting, sculpture, building, or something else) look the way it does and have the impact that it does?

Like other humanities subject, a History of Art A level teaches you a range of useful transferable skills, including:

  • How to construct a logical argument and form a judgement based on evidence?
  • How to research a topic thoroughly by finding and analysing a large body of relevant material?
  • How to present a case clearly and convincingly, written and spoken?
  • How to think creatively?

Increasingly, History of Art skills link with and are sought out in:

  • Sciences,
  • Medical professionals,
  • Law
  • Criminal investigators,

As well as more traditional roles such as:

  • Architecture,
  • Fine arts
  • Graphics.
  • Curating, research, and auction houses,
  • Costume,
  • Events,
  • Teaching,
  • Design,
  • the fashion industry,
  • Film
  • Television
  • Advertising

The Great Masters

This year I will run The Great Masters History of Art course progressing from the Renaissance to the late 20th Century. Each half term will focus on one renown artist from their period and marry an evolving study of that artist alongside other significant contemporaries and will address painting, sculpture and architecture.  She introduces painters, their historical period, and their techniques so that students collect a variety of ways of seeing, and with these tools, they are able to feel at home in any museum in the world.

We encourage students to address the works and ideas we cover through a range of create and recreative responses from painting to letter writing to creative imaginings and descriptive writing.

The course is suitable for students 11+ though I’m happy to be flexible and you can email me directly with any questions. In all art there may be some examples of works with mild nudity in the context of mythology, for example.

For UK students, this course would be a useful adjunct for anyone studying Art GCSE who will need to complete art research, and serve as a solid foundation for those to those who want to do A-level Art History or Fine Art in the future.

History of Art A level tuition

The History of Art A Level, it could be start in either September 2020 (two years) or January 2021 (15 months). Full online resources to cover the course will be provided for a group.

Alternatively, I am able to provide individual tuition for the current Edexcel A-Level and have completed all the Pearson training for the new syllabus.
